Larsson discusses the
process of composing. As an illustrative example, Larsson reconstructs the
composing of his mass Missa brevis. The text is provided with incipits of
sketches, as well as from the final score. This documentation gives an
extraordinary detailed and interesting illustration of how Larsson, himself,
thinks about the process of composing, in his own works. Larsson emphasizes the
fact that he is not aware of many of the relations between preceding sketches
and the final outcome, until reviewing his material.

Wallner describes what
happened among composers in Sweden during the 1940s. A detailed table of what
was composed during each year is given, comparing for groups of composers: 1)
non-Scandinavian composers at the time,2) contemporary composers in Denmark,
Norway and Finland, 3) Swedish composers who had appeared already during the
1920s and 1930s, 4) composers who did their debut during the 1940s.

Bo Wallner presents in
his book all composers in the Scandinavian countries (Norway, Sweden, Denmark,
Finland and Iceland), that were active from 1920 through the beginning of the
1960s. Larsson is mentioned together with his contemporaries, such as Dag Wirén
(1905-1986) and Gunnar de Frumerie (1908-1987). Wallner says that even if
Larsson came in contact with both Arthur Honegger's (1892-1955) and Alban
Berg's (1885-1935) music in the end of the 1920s, influences from those to
composers are not visible in Larsson's compositions during the 1930s. On the
other hand, elements associated with Hindemith are apparent between 1930 and
1935. Larsson's international debut at the ISCM (International Society for
Contemporary Music) Festival in Florence 1934 is mentioned. The saxophone
concerto is mentioned as one of the most prominent compositions during the
1930s, all of which featured neo-classic style. Furthermore, Larsson's shift to
neo-romantic style during the 1940s and his use of dodecaphonic forms during
the 1950s are discussed.

misunderstanding concerning the initiative behind the concertino series op.45.
The second edition of Sohlmans musiklexikon says that the series was
commissioned and ordered from the Swedish Radio. The correction is that the
initiative and idea of a concertino series was Larsson's only. However, the
Swedish Radio was more than Willing to premier the entire series in their own

Larsson describes his
childhood and illustrates how his earliest attempts to write music turn out.
The autobiography goes up to the time of his arrival and studies in Stockholm.
Thereafter, Larsson states his general views concerning whether or not the
composer could have to explain his music in words or not, e.g. absolute music
in contrast to program music. Other contemporary phenomina such as quarter
tones are discussed.

Larsson known in
Australia for his Saxophone Concerto. Together with Dag Wirén, Larsson
represents the neo-classicism and can be compared with theirs contemporaries in
England and France. However, both Larsson and Wirén are influenced by Carl
Nilsen. Most of Larsson's works are in
divertimento style - for small orchestra. Recent compositions such as
the Music for Orchestra has a darker harmony than the cantata Förklädd
gud and the Pastoralsviten. The Violin Konsert is one of the best
Scandinavian violin concertos along with Sibelius' and Faten Valen's violin
concertos.(McCedie)
